Citizen Independent 1481010 Spawn Special Edition: Spawn

This watch is another of the special edition 1481010 watches that was released in the late 90s, and is the second of the 4 watches released in 1998 to commemorate the release of the 1997 movie from the comic book Spawn.

The 1481010 range is one of my favourites, and much more information can be found on my 1481010 summary page (link).

The Spawn comic was created by Todd McFarlane in 1992 and published by Image Comics, and in 1997 a movie came out loosely based on the origin of the Spawn character. The comic and movie revolve around a government assassin who is killed and offered a deal by the Devil to lead his army. Spawn eventually realizes his true purpose and fights both the forces of heaven and hell, along with various criminals.

This model is the Spawn version and is one of two D380 models that were released in the Spawn range. It features the Spawn logo on the button instead of the radioactive symbol, and the Spawn title above the display. The back also has an engraved version of McFarlane's signature on. As it has the standard D380 module, the watch has dual alarms and a chronograph mode, and the usual cured dot matrix display

The full model number is D380-L18692, and the catalogue number is IT21-4231G. It was originally released for 15,000 yen, and I think it was a limited edition of 5000.

Citizen Independent 1481010 - Boxed D380 White

Today I'm going to do something strange today - I'm blogging a watch model and version I've blogged before.

The watch in question is one of the 1481010 watches by Citizen that are one of my favourite collections (but you may have noticed that already).

This model is one of the D380 versions that usually have a radioactive symbol on the front button. They have dual alarms (composed by Ken Ishii) and chronograph modes.

The reason why I'm blogging the same model again is that before I didn't know any catalogue number or details, but now I've got a boxed version.

So this one has a catalogue number of IT21-4235G, model number of D380-L18665 and were from 1998.

The box features an x-ray style image of a head and points out parts of the brain (the cerebellum and the cerebral cortex), as well as 'a flash of inspiration'. It also shows a 3-D wireframe image of the watch. The case is interesting and squeezes the watch between two sheets of stretchy plastic to hold it in place in the box.

The seller also gave a page from a magazine called 'Used Marked Premium Research'. This shows the watch and gives it a price of 120,000 yen - i guess it's a typo though and should be 12,000 yen (but it does have the higher number in two places). I've included the photo, so any translation would be great!

XLarge Break Beats Independent 1481010

As you may have noticed, I have a lot of watches which are variations on the D380 module, and this is another of them.

The D380 was used mainly (maybe exclusively) in the Citizen Independent 1481010 line of watches, and there were many special editions based on this design. The 1481010 range was released in the late 90s as a line of fashion watches, and more details about the range can be found in my overview page (link).

This particular version is a collaboration from 1998 between Citizen and the XLarge (or X-Large) clothing brand.

XLarge was founded in 1991 in Los Angeles and produced clothing in the Urban and Hip hop style (with one of the Beastie Boys being an original partner in the company). They were the first brand to use a gorilla/ape design as their logo, ahead of the (more famous?) Bathing Ape / Bape line. This gorilla head logo is placed on the front button of the watch where the radioactive symbol is usually printed. The watch model is called Break Beats, and is in a green camouflage design, with the camo outline also engraved on the strap curved metal one-piece strap along with text explaining the colour for that section.

It was released as a limited edition, but I don't know how many were produced.
From the watch point of view, it is the same as the other D380 models, with a curved text inverse dot matrix LCD display. It has dual alarms and a chronograph function, and the alarm tune was composed by Japanese DJ Ken Ishii.

Citizen Independent 1481010 - D380 white, no symbol

Today's watch is another where the shape will look familiar to those following my blog for a while, but with a design difference.

Many D380 watches were released in Citizen's Independent 1481010 range. The range was out from 1997 to 2003 as a fashion brand for young people, and more information can be found about the range in my 1481010 overview page (link).

Normally I refer to the D380 watches as 'radioactive', as they have the radiation symbol on the large front button. But some were released with no symbol (-there are at least 3 colour variants like this). It appears that the symbols are not printed rather than being worn away, as there is no trace of either ink or scratches on the button.

Apart from the lack of symbol, the watch is the same as the other D380 models, with the curved metal strap and shield shaped head. The watch has the normal curved effect dot matrix LCD display with mode indicator triangles. Mode-wise, there are dual alarms and a chronograph function. Pressing the button sets off an alarm composed by Ken Ishii, as with the normal model.

The full model number is D380-L18765 but it doesn't appear in any of the catalogues. This particular watch was made in 1998.

Citizen Independent 1481010 D380 - LTJ Bukem limited edition

I have a lot of D380 watches in my 1481010 collection, and here is another one!

In 1998, the Citizen Independent 1481010 brand collaborated with Good Looking Records and DJ LTJ Bukem to produce a set of special watches. All of the watches in this collection have black faces and gold writing, and this one also has a shiny black curved metal strap, rather than the normal silver one.

The back of the watch is stamped with the Good Looking Records logo, and the LTJ Bukem name.
LTJ Bukem is otherwise known as Danny Williamson, and he is known as one of the innovators of drum and bass music. Good Looking Records was formed in the early 90s by Bukem, for releasing Jungle and Drum and Bass music, and last released a record in 2009.

Apart from the design, this is a normal D380 with the curved dot matrix LCD, and the usual dual alarm and chronograph modes.

Citizen Independent 1481010 D380 - Gundam Zeon Limited Edition

Today's 1481010 is a type I've shown before, but this is a special edition.
The watch has a D380 module, giving it time, 2 alarms, and a chronograph on it's curved dot matrix LCD screen.
This limited edition was released to mark the 20th anniversary of the Gundam franchise in 1999. Imprinted on the metal strap is a logo showing a Gundam Mobile Suit head with the text "Mobile Suit Gundam Since 1979. Gundam Bigbang Project". Above the display, the watch shows Mobile Suit Gundam. On the front button, instead of the radioactive symbol, is the insignia of the Zeon Forces.

Citizen Independent 1481010 D380 - Ken Ishii special edition

Today's watch is a special edition of a model I've posted about before.

This is the Ken Ishii special of the "Radioactive " D380 model. All of the D380s in the 1481010 range have the alarms composed by Ken Ishii, but this model has the symbol of the Ken Ishii album Innerelements (1994) on the button, and has a blue metal band. The watch was made in 1998, and released in limited numbers.

The D380 module has the normal functions of time, date, two alarms, and a chronograph, on the dot-matrix LCD display.

Citizen Independent 1481010 D380-L18404 blue & clear

Today, it's another of my Citizen Independent 1481010 collection. This watch was released sometime between 1998 and 2003, and can be found in a lot of different colours and many special editions. I'll be showing more of these as I work through my collection.

The watch itself has a curved dot matrix LCD, and the D380 module gives it a chronograph and two alarms.
The main standout part of the design is the large button with a nuclear reactor symbol on. When pressed, this sounds one of the two alarms, and the display shows jumping graphic equaliser style bars for a while.

The alarms were composed by Japanese DJ Ken Ishii (and there is an Ishii special edition in the 1481010 range).

The main strap is a one-piece metal band which is quite springy. A lot of these watches suffer from breakages of the strap in the plastic sections used for linking the parts of the watch together, probably due in part to the metal strap wanting to straighten all of the time.
