Citizen Independent 1481010 Overview

The Citizen Independent 1481010 line of watches was first released in 1997 with the aim of appealing to the young fashionable crowd who would be interested in the interesting, unusual and eye-catching designs from the range. The 1481010s were in direct competition with the Seiko AKA brand which was targeting the same group of customers, and kept up a battle between the two giants of Japanese watches, Citizen and Seiko. The Japanese name is インディペンデント  or インデペンデント .

The line was only ever formally released in the far east, but some did manage to make their way around the world.

All of the watches in the Independent range were given the designation IT21 in the catalogues, and can be found under that number. The newer range of Citizen Independent watches (without the 1481010 part), have a designation of ITJ21.

The watch used many different designs and had collaborations with various clothing companies and shops, as well as popular Japanese artists and DJs.

Collaborations and special versions released in the 1481010 line include:

  2. Hi! I have just picked up a brand new c351-16673 in Hungary, for HUF 11000 - that is around 35 EUR. There are two more Independents at this shop, and I love mine already. Your site rocks, clealy the most comprehensive site about these watches.

  7. Great resource. I too was interested in the 1481010 number and the relation to pagers to represent "independent". One possibility could be the use of Goroawase (phonetic matching) a common form of Japanese wordplay. Every digit has a set of possible phonetic values, due to the variety of valid Japanese kanji readings (kun'yomi and on'yomi) and English-origin pronunciations for numbers in Japanese. The original logo seperates the number as 14 810 10. Interestingly (according to the AI I used), 810 could be read as "ya hito maru" (eight person zero), potentially suggesting independence or individuality.

Pushing the AI further it suggested 3 possibilities:
    1) "Ichi yon hachi ichi maru jū": This could be interpreted as "one four, eight one zero ten," which might signify "starting anew with full confidence" or "independence through a complete transformation."
    2) "Ji yōn ya hito to to": This translates to "ground world eight person repeatedly," potentially suggesting "repeatedly asserting your individuality in the world" or "building your own path with unwavering independence."
    3) "Ichi yon hachi ichi maru to to": This combines elements of both interpretations, forming "one four, eight one zero repeatedly." It could emphasize a continuous cycle of new beginnings, personal growth, and maintaining strong independence.
