Nooka Zub Zot 38 Purple

It's been a while since my last Nooka watch, so I felt like today was a good day to wear one.

This model is a Zub Zot 38 design in Purple, and is one of the standard models. The Zub watches are noted as being the very first one piece construction monochromatic polycarbonate watches on the market (according to the Nooka website). It came in a few different strap widths, and the 38 in the name denotes that this has the 38mm wide strap. The Zot name is for the display type which are the Nooka specialities. The Zot has 12 dots along the top half of the face covering the hours, and there is an LCD bar below which fills up with the minutes. In the bottom left corner is a small LCD window for the seconds, while the bottom right shows am/pm and whether the alarm is active.

Nooka 360 Night

Today's watch is one of my Nooka collection, but something unlike all of the others I've blogged so far.

The Nooka brand was founded by designer Matthew Waldman who developed the unique Nooka style. I've blogged many Nooka and there is more info on the brand in the other posts.

The watch is the Nooka 360 Night and it is one of the high quality models from the brand. The watch is unusual for a Nooka in that it is a round design rather than the normal square. This is also an analogue design with a 3 hand dial (which is also uncommon, but I've shown one analogue Nooka before).

The watch has a deep steel case and so sits high out of your wrist, but this is due to the feature which gives the watch its name. The unique function of the watch is that the entire head can be rotated clockwise through a full 360 degrees. This allows you to set the watch at whatever angle is easiest to use, whether for normal use on your wrist, or for things such as driving where you look at an unusual angle.

This version is the all black model with black case, face, hands, and (Italian) leather strap. The face is textured, and appears more dark grey than black so the black hands can be seen relatively easily.

The watch is one of the newer designs, and I think it only came out in the last couple of years. It is still available from Nooka, and has an rrp of $285.

One thing about the watch I didn't find online was the battery change instructions, so I thought I can let my readers know. There are 4 small holes on the back of the watch near where the strap attaches. When the head is rotated to be exactly straight, these will align with 4 small screws, but just show the black case when misaligned. These screws release the front of the case from the strap and rotating section which allows you to get to the battery.

Nooka Zot Gold

I wanted to wear a flashy and noticeable watch today, and I found a Nooka to fit that requirement.

Today's Nooka is shiny! I've posted on of the gold Zirc watches too and both of these have a super shiny reflective gold face making them catch the light like crazy.

This model is one of the Zot watches and was likely part of the V-Series rather than the more common Zub design. I've seen the watch referred to as a Zot-V on some sites. In this one, the watch has a square face with rounded corners and a separate gold leather strap.

The Zot design uses dots for the hours with three rows of four dots. Below are the minutes which are shown as a bar which fills as the hour progresses. At the bottom is the seconds display (in normal digits) and other markers (am, pm, and alarm). The Zot has time and date display options, as well as an alarm and stopwatch. There is also an el-backlight for illuminating the LCD sections.

The V-Series watches are among the smarter designs for the Nookas and tend to be a little more expensive (rrp around $225-275). The watch was released around 2009, but the gold version is not available anymore.

The Nooka brand was started in 2005 by Matthew Waldman. They make many different models of interesting looking and fashionable watches, and have done many collaborations (a lot of which are  limited edition) with all manner of products, events, and artists. Nooka Zub Zirc 38 Adventure Time - Jake

Today, I'm back to one of my favourite brands for their combination of cool, fashionable, and unusual - Nooka.

The Nooka brand has been around since 2005 when designer Matthew Waldman took the ideas he'd been working on and started a new watch company. Since then, the Nooka brand has been producing many variations on their concept along with many collaboration models with events, characters, and artists.

They currently have an Indiegogo campaign running for a new limited edition model chronograph (which is a first for the brand). The campaign can be found at this link. So if you like Nooka style, now is a great time to get yourself one!

This model is one of the Nooka collaboration models, and this time with the cartoon series Adventure Time. The Adventure Time story was created by Pendleton Ward and follows the adventures of a human boy called Finn and his companion, a shape changing magical dog called Jake. The series follows their exploits in the Land of Ooo (which are quite Dungeons and Dragons inspired) and its unusual residents such as Princess Bubblegum and the Ice King. The cartoon is in its 6th season and has been a success with the critics and in the ratings. For the watch, Nooka partnered with Cartoon Network Enterprises to produce models inspired by Jake the dog and Finn the human from the series.

This model is the Finn the dog watch (-I'll be blogging Jake at some point in the future) and is in the same yellow colour as the character. On the strap, above the display is Jake's face, while his arms are on the bottom of the strap.

This is a Nooka Zirc design with the hours in a circle of dots, the minutes in a line along the bottom, and a little window for the seconds. The Zirc has a few other modes with alarm and stopwatch as well as the time display. This Zirc design is a a Zub Zirc, and so has the one piece rubbery strap design, and this is a Zub 38 and so has a 38mm wide strap.

The watch is still available from the Nooka website, along with the other 4 Adventure Time designs.

Nooka Zan Mirror

I'm wearing an eye-catching shiny watch today, and one which has taken me a long time to find online.

This watch is the Zan Mirror (or mr) by the New York based watch brand Nooka. I've posted many Nooka watches before, but this is my first analogue watch from them.

The Zan Mirror has a very clean and uncluttered design. It features the same square metal case shape as many of the other Nookas, but this time with an inset round face. There are no markings on the front of the watch (Nooka is engraved on the left side), and it is finished in a super shiny mirror style. It uses a 3 hand dial with thin silver hands, and at the end of the hands there are small glow-in-the-dark markers (dot for seconds, small cross for minutes, and large cross for hours). My one has a thick silver fabric and Italian leather strap with Nooka buckle, but this model often came with a metal mesh strap. Inside is a Japanese quartz movement (Miyota), and the watch is 5 atm water resistant.

The Nooka brand was founded by the designer Matthew Waldman, and follows the principles of the Nookafesto (universal communication, passion, interaction, purpose, inspiration, and futurism). I'm not sure when this model came out, but it is not available for sale anymore, and it is not found online very often. On the back there is the number AS0086 which may be a model number (or just the serial number).

Nooka Zub Zayu Yellow

It's been a little while since I blogged a Nooka, but as they are one of my larger sub-collections, I thought it'd be good to cover another one. The thing with the Nooka watches is that there are so many interesting and eye-catching designs in the collection, and there is always some cool design or limited edition collaboration piece that I'm tempted by. Today's model is the one in the Nooka collection with the largest display and is called the Zayu. The Zayu design is asymmetric, with the strap at the right and the case extending up your arm, but it is also swappable, so that you can use it right or left handed (and the text on the display is written side-on so it doesn't look weird for either).

Time is displayed with a combination of dots and bars on the LCD display. The dots (or more correctly capsule shapes) show the hours, there is a thick bar that fills with the minutes, and a thinner bar for the seconds. The display can show time and date, along with the alarm mode, and it has a stopwatch too. There is also a sleep mode that switches off the LCD to save battery when the watch isn't being used.

The Nooka brand is the brainchild of Matthew Waldman, who after a short collaboration with Seiko started the Nooka company. They don't just make watches, but also have other interestingly designed products with unique but highly functional designs. I'm normally wearing one of the Nooka belts and using a Nooka wallet, and they also have other products such as t-shirts and sunglasses.

The Zayu design is still available on the Nooka website (as of Feb 2014), and generally costs $129, but this yellow one is currently only $49!

Normally, the box isn't worth a mention in my blog, but with this watch it's something unusual. The box is a collaboration between Nooka and Silicone Zone, and this has resulted in a box made from food grade silicone. Because of this, the package is suitable to be used for food, is microwave safe, and can be put in the dishwasher.

Nooka Zub Zirc 20 - Vans Warped Tour 2011 Limited Edition

Today I'm going to a Hiphop Christmas party, and so am wearing a watch with some skate culture links.

This watch is by the American brand Nooka which was created by Matthew Waldman to bring his unique designs to market.

In 2011, the Nooka company was a sponsor of the 17th annual Vans Warped Tour. For the event, Nooka produced 200 watches, of which 96 were promotional giveaways, and the remaining 104 were sold. The design has a stylized map showing the tour route on the strap, and the tour logo on the face and back.

The watch uses the Nooka Zub Zirc design, with the Zub referring to the case design, and Zirc being the time telling method. The Zirc has a ring of dots for the hours, and a bar for the minutes along the bottom. In the bottom right above the minutes is a small seconds display too. The watch has time and date displays and an alarm. There is also a stopwatch mode, but only accurate to the nearest second.

Nooka Zub Zibi Zirc - Blue Glow

A lot of the Nooka watches I've posted so far have had a certain look - square displays with a combination of bars and numbers. This Nooka watch is a little different, and is full of hexagons.

The watch is a Zub Zibi Zirc and is a smaller watch than many of the other designs. It has a hexagonal face with a square LCD display in the middle. There are two parts to the display - the hours are in a circle and represented by 12 blocks that fill as the time progresses. The minutes are shown in numbers in the middle, but instead of using the usual 7 segment LCD digits, these are made of 13 hexagonal blocks, making each digit look very rounded. Controls are by the buttons on either side of the case, and these are arranged to look like the infinity symbol that is used for the two o's in the Nooka logo. This model has dual time modes, and also includes an alarm.

The module is encased in a rubbery resin case, which in this case glows blue. The strap fastener is a little unusual, with the lower strap clicking upwards onto a peg on the buckle.

The back has a lot of text as well as the Nooka Mindstyle marks, and explains the laws and patents that the watch is covered by.

The watch is also 3atm water resistant, and has a backlight for nighttime use.

Nooka is the brainchild of artist/designer Matthew Waldman, and is a fashion design company based in New York. Everything is designed under the guidance of their Nookafesto of Universal Communication, Passion, Interaction, Purpose, Inspiration, and Futurism.

Nooka + S9EZ Zub Zot with Mini NookaNooka

It's been a while since I posted a Nooka, but as I'm off to an opening of an art exhibition, this watch will fit in well.

The Nooka brand was started by Matthew Waldman who's novel designs lead from work with Seiko to running a watch (and accessories) company.

This model is a collaboration between Nooka and S9EZ and features a strap covered in the S9EZ skull logo. S9EZ was started in 2011 by DevilRobots founder Shinichiro Kitai and figurine maker Takuji Honda. They work together in various types of media for the Japanese and international market using the two tone skull logo. It may be a limited edition, but says 001/XXX, so that might just be for show.

The watch is one of Nooka's Zub Zot 20 models. It has an LCD display with a series of dots for the hours, a horizontal bar for the minutes, and a two digit numerical display for seconds. The display can also show the date, and there is an alarm too. This display is called the Zot layout (and is the first Zot I've blogged).

It has a rubber 20mm wide strap with a buckle (the Zub and 20 part of the name).

The watch also has a companion NookaNooka collectors toy. The toy is the representative of the Nooka brand and has a distinctive U shaped head. It can also be used as a stand for the watch which loops around the body and head. So far 11 designs of these have been produced and are linked with the artist series Nooka watches.

Nooka Zub ZenV wide strap white

It's been a while since the last Nooka, so here's another one.
The Nooka brand was started by Matthew Waldman in 2004 to manufacture his unique style of watches. His first design had been released by Seiko (found here), but after issues with its marketing and distribution, he bought the concept back and Nooka was born.

The Nooka watches come in various shapes and sizes;
This watch has a ZenV face where the time is shown by 3 vertical bars, 2 for hours (6 blocks in each), and one for minutes (with individual blocks for each minute). There are also markers for am and pm, and alarm, as well as a small window for the seconds.
The strap is the Zub design which is a one piece polyurethane band, and this is the wider 38mm strap version.

Nooka x Hellz Limited Edition Zoo

It's been a while since I posted a Nooka, so to make up for it, here is a limited edition one!

The Nooka brand was started in 2004 by Matthew Waldman to produce his unique watch designs, one of which had previously been sold by Seiko. They have collaborated with many brands and products including this one with Hellz.

Hellz is a contemporary clothes brand from LA which was started in 2006. It caters for the class of rebellious youth who specialise in the creation of subculture, and tries to balance a fine line between constraint and restraint.

The Hellz collaboration watch has a shiny blue and purple face which looks like a photo from outer space. It is a limited edition release which came out in November 2008, and had only 200 released!

This Noola model is a Zoo from the V-Series style. The minutes are shown as dots in a bar along the top, with the hours in a large window at the bottom. The other displays are am/pm, seconds, and alarm indicator.

Nooka Zen-H Creatures of the Night Crooklyn Remix

Today it's another of Matthew Waldman's Nooka watches, and is probably the least inconspicuous camouflage designs I've seen ;-).

The watch is one of the Zen-H designs with a stainless steel case, and is covered with Nooka's Creatures Of The Night (COTN) urban camouflage designs. The design has various urban animals (pigeons, rats, mice, bats, and cats) in the pattern, and this colour variant is the Crooklyn Remix version (-it can also be found in green and grey).

The Zen-H design has two rows at the top showing hours, one row for minutes, and the bottom row with seconds (with markers for am/pm and alarm at the very bottom). The watch can show time or date, has an alarm function, and also has a chronograph function. For dark times, there is an electro-luminescent backlight.

This model was shown in late 2007, and came out in January 2008.

Nooka Zirc Gold

As my last post on a Nooka (link) has reached 1000 pageviews, it's time for another Nooka on my blog.
The Nooka Zirc is another in the Matthew Waldman's Nooka brand, and is possibly one of the most flashy and noticeable in my collection (and that is saying something!).

The Zirc combines an hour display in a more traditional circular arrangement, with a bar below showing the minutes. The hour display has one LCD dot for each hour, and 60 lines for the minutes. There are markers for am and pm, and to show if the alarm is active.

The watch face is VERY shiny, making it look rather flashy, and has Nooka written on each side, with the buttons inside the 'oo' (or to be more correct, the infinity symbol). The strap is a fine gold mesh with a Nooka clasp.

You can still buy the watch from Nooka (link) or their distributors (as of May 2012) for $300.

The original Nooka by Matthew Waldman for Seiko

Today's watch is the watch that began the Nooka watches.

This watch was designed by Matthew Waldman in 1997 with an "intuitive interface to tell time" using fractions and bars. The design was licenced by Seiko who released this watch (which was a variation on Matthews original design).

The watch has an LCD display split into several sections. The top line shows the hours in blocks (up to 12) and a pm markers. The main number display shows the minutes, with a small display for seconds.
Mode-wise, the watch has time, date and alarm. For the date, the bar shows months, the main display shows date, and the small display shows the day.

Unfortunately, according to Waldman in a 2004 interview on the Wristfashion blog (link), Seiko never marketed the design (no ads, no events), and made it from a steel that couldn't be exported to Europe (which should have been the biggest market). This meant they didn't sell too many units, and the watch production stopped (2003). Waldman then ceased the licence agreement, and the Nooka range was started (2005). The Seiko Nooka is similar to the Nooka Zoo which has the hours and minutes switched.

The watch is designated the W524-4A00, and and this one was manufactured in 2002. The model number is STN001, and the strap part number is 3030-Z.C

Nooka Zub Zoo - wide strap blue

Today's watch is a Nooka Zub Zoo. The Nooka brand was started in 2004 by Matthew Waldman to produce his watch designs. The brand name comes from New York City. His first design was made for Seiko, but only had 1 production run. The naming designates the display and strap style; Zub is the strap type (and could be narrow or wide), and Zoo is the display.
The Zoo LCD display has a large window for the hours, and a horizontal bar for the minutes. There are also indicators for AM/PM and alarm. Function-wise, the watch has time, date, and alarm only.
