Jean Paul Gaultier JPG Face 97

In February, I blogged a watch from Jean Paul Gaultier called the JPG In Space, and today's watch in part of the same line.

Gaultier is a very flamboyant and well known fashion designer, who is recognised for his extreme designs (Madonna's cone bra), gender stereotype breaking (men in skirts), and his line of perfumes and aftershaves. Over the years, he has also designed many different watches, especially in the late 90s when he had the JPG (or J.P.G) range which I've been covering a lot on the blog.

This watch is one of the analogue models and is based around the Citizen quartz 1030 module. It has a 3 hand dial design in a deep round silver case. The main difference from the model I blogged in February is the design on the face, but they share the JPG text/logo which is one of the prominent features. The other part of the design here is a man's head where he has a red star in the middle of his forehead (with 19 written in it), and that is next to a large number 97 (which gives away this was a 1997 release and that is confirmed by the serial number).

The back of the watch is dominated by the JPG logo with the other information around the edge (base metal, water resistant, made in Japan). The watch also has a matching leather and fabric strap which also includes the JPG logo imprinted on the leather on the inside.

Jean Paul Gaultier UFO Leather Strap

I've blogged a few watches by this designer before, but this one is a little different style to the others.

The watch is by the flamboyant fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier. Gaultier is known for his outrageous clothing designs (for example Madonna's famous cone bra) as well as perfumes and aftershaves, but he has also been designing watches (at least) since the late 90s.

I've been blogging a range called JPG (or J.P.G) before, which was a set of watches made by Citizen in the late 90s. This watch is also made by Citizen, but not part of the JPG range. Instead, this watch is marked with the Jean Paul Gaultier name/logo.

From what I've found, this model is called (or normally referred to as) the UFO, and it does have the feel/design that you'd expect for a 50s style idea of a UFO. The case is large round brushed steel with a slightly domed shape. In the centre is a round domed glass where the time is shown. The watch is an analogue design with a 3 hand dial. Inside is a Citizen 6031 quartz movement. In a link to yesterday's watch, the hour markers here are also made from the letters of a name with Gaultier used for most of the markers, but dots for the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock markers.

Looking online for the watch, I only seemed to find Japanese links for this model (especially when calling it the UFO), so it may have been a Japan only release. I think the watch may be newer than the JPG range, which would suggest a 2005 manufacture (based on the serial number), but it could have been 1995. Some sites I found had suggested an rrp of just under ¥20,000 but I can't completely confirm this.

JPG In Space watch

I while ago I blogged about a range of watches by Jean Paul Gaultier from the late 90s. Today's watch is also from that collection, but a very different design.

Jean Paul Gaultier is one of the more well known fashion designers (and also has a range of perfumes and aftershaves), and is recognised for his flamboyant style. He has produced many well known outfits for celebrities, with his most famous work probably being for Madonna with her cone bra (or maybe his men in skirts who included David Beckham). In 1997, he collaborated with Citizen to produce a range of watches which included both analogue and digital models.

This watch is one of the analogue designs, and has the text JPG In Space on the dial. It is a 3 hand dial design, with a Citizen 1030 movement inside. The case is round and quite deep. The face of the watch is a good distance behind the glass and features a yellow, blue, and purple curvy geometric design. The numbers are printed on the inside of the glass and are in the retro computer style font. The design is completed with an striped shiny strap with leather backing that looks orange from one angle and green from a different angle.

The back has the JPG logo as with the others in this range, and states this is made of basd metal and is water resistant. The full model number is shown and is 1030-L16231. There is no serial number on this model, but the similarities to the other JPG watches and the use of the Citizen 1030 module in the 1481010 1481010 watches in the same period make me conclude that this is also from around 1997. Several colour variations were produced, and I've seen a blue one too.

Jean Paul Gaultier D296

Today's watch is another unusual design by Jean Paul Gaultier, and is the second of his watches I've blogged (-the first was blogged July 2012).

Jean Paul Gaultier is a very famous and flamboyant fashion designer. He started his career after Pierre Cardain was impressed by his designs and hired him as an assistant. He worked his way through the haute couture and pret-a-porter world and was the creative director for Hermès. He is most known for his outrageous designs such as Madonna's cone shaped chest, men in skirts, and various outfits for Marilyn Manson and Kylie Minogue.

In the late 90s (around 1997), he collaborated with Citizen to produce a range of watches (at least 3 designs).

This model, like the last one, is based on the D296 module. It has a 2 section LCD display in pink and purple with a custom shape for the digits, which have a wider bottom section on the vertical lines. The top LCD is 6 purple digits on a pink background, while the bottom LCD only has 4 digits in pink on a purple background. The case could be described as either round with rectangular top and bottom, or rectangular with a bulge at the middle, and has the JPG initials in a yellow band across the middle.

For modes, this model has two alarms, stopwatch, timer, and dual time with the normal time dropping to the lower screen when another mode is selected.

The back also has a large JPG logo engraved in, and mentions water resistance, but with no rating. It also mentions that the case is base metal rather than stainless steel. This one has a replacement strap, so I'm not sure what the original was like.

The full model number is D296-L16711, and the watch was made in 1997. A new old stock one is for sale at the moment in Japan for around ¥30,000.

Jean Paul Gaultier TR-40 Dual LCD

This watch is designed by the famous French haute couture fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier. He is most known for his flamboyant designs including cone breasted outfits (as worn by Madonna), and his men-in-skirts range.

The watch has a dual LCD display with pink text on the top, and an inverse pink display on the bottom screen. Inbetween the screens, Gaultier logo is printed in green. The text on the top display is an unusual shape with the bottom vertical elements being thicker.

It has a D296 module (by Citizen?) with dual time, dual alarm, stopwatch, and timer. In time mode, the top display is the time, and the bottom is the date. In the other modes, the time shows in the bottom, and the particular mode shows in the top.

I don't know when this was made, but if it is a Citizen, with a normal serial number, it was made in 1997. UPDATE: I found this in a Japanese magazine from the late 90s (photo added), so it must be from 97!
