Casio G-Shock DW-5600VT - XLarge Ltd Edn

I've now blogged a few different XLarge (or X-Large) watches, but today's is one of the big collaborations they did.

This watch is the collaboration between XLarge and Casio to produce a limited edition G-Shock watch. The watch is a G-Shock DW-5600 design which is designated DW-5600VT. The -VT models seem to be the mark for the line of watches where Casio released the limited editions, and there have been many different designs produced over the years.

This limited edition looks to have been released around 2006 or 2007, but I don't have any information on the number of units produced. It was a Japanese market version (as it has the Foxfire name), but was officially sold in one store in the US, the XLarge store in Los Angeles. This isn't a common model, so they seem to command a high price in the second hand market. The model has the same case shape as the regular DW-5600, but has the XLarge name under the glass above the LCD. The strap is also covered by a faint pattern of leaves and flowers. The el-backlight reveals a red image of the XLarge clothing name and Ape logo. The XLarge name is also engraved in the centre of the back plate.

The DW-5600 watch is an LCD design with a 2 line LCD display. The LCD shows day and date along the top, with the 6 digit time along the bottom. The date is shown on a little box in the top left, and during the other modes, the time is shown here. Inside is a 1545 module which gives the watch time, alarm, stopwatch, and timer modes. The module start date is 1995 which shows the design has been around for a while.

XLarge 8777NW Tiger Stripe Camo watch

Collecting the 1481010 watches has lead to a few spin-off collections due to their collaboration models. The XLarge brand watches are one of those which started with a 1481010 and now this is my third XLarge watch (with more to come).

Today's XLarge (or X Large or X-Large) watch is a pretty simple design model. It is a 3 hand dial design powered by a quartz movement in a plastic case. The face and the strap are covered in a light brown, yellow, and white pattern arranged a little like Tiger stripes. The XLarge name shows on both the dial and the back, and the back also has the model number, 8777NW. Overall, the use of colour, the shape, and the materials make this feel very like the style Swatch is famous for. Inside, the watch uses a Seiko Epson Y121G module, but there are no makers marks for the watch itself. I've blogged a couple of other watches which used the Y121 module, and as both of those were very late 90s, I'd guess this is from around that time too.

The XLarge brand are a street, skate, and hiphop wear company which started on California in 1991. They became known due to one of the Beastie Boys being part of the idea behind the brand, but are still popular today.

XLarge Ape Logo watch

About 18 months ago, I blogged a collaboration between the Citizen Independent line and a clothing brand called X-Large (or XLarge). Today's watch is another X-Large watch, but released on its own.

The X-Large brand started in 1991 in California. It is a brand making street, skate, and hip-hop wear, and has been very popular due to its supposed links to the Beastie Boys (although the link is only that one of the band members helped formulate the idea of the brand). Their clothes are still popular and have a strong second hand market. The brand is known for its Ape logo, which supposedly came before the Bathing Ape /Bape brand.

This watch prominently displays the X-Large Ape logo with it taking up almost the whole of the dial. It is a 3 hand dial design with a Japanese quartz movement, and is 30m water resistant. The rest of the watch design is quite plain with just a shiny silver case and expanding bracelet strap.

The warranty card shows returns to ZNX Timerica from California. They are a watch distribution company, and may have been the manufacturer or distributor on behalf of X-Large.

XLarge Break Beats Independent 1481010

As you may have noticed, I have a lot of watches which are variations on the D380 module, and this is another of them.

The D380 was used mainly (maybe exclusively) in the Citizen Independent 1481010 line of watches, and there were many special editions based on this design. The 1481010 range was released in the late 90s as a line of fashion watches, and more details about the range can be found in my overview page (link).

This particular version is a collaboration from 1998 between Citizen and the XLarge (or X-Large) clothing brand.

XLarge was founded in 1991 in Los Angeles and produced clothing in the Urban and Hip hop style (with one of the Beastie Boys being an original partner in the company). They were the first brand to use a gorilla/ape design as their logo, ahead of the (more famous?) Bathing Ape / Bape line. This gorilla head logo is placed on the front button of the watch where the radioactive symbol is usually printed. The watch model is called Break Beats, and is in a green camouflage design, with the camo outline also engraved on the strap curved metal one-piece strap along with text explaining the colour for that section.

It was released as a limited edition, but I don't know how many were produced.
From the watch point of view, it is the same as the other D380 models, with a curved text inverse dot matrix LCD display. It has dual alarms and a chronograph function, and the alarm tune was composed by Japanese DJ Ken Ishii.
