Citizen Vagary CE90

Today, I'm in a bit meeting, so wanted a watch which looked pretty smart, but was still a little quirky.

The watch I picked is one of the watches from the Citizen Vagary line. The Vagary line is owned by Citizen Italy, rather than being a Japanese model. The watches do seem to be sold at retailers in Italy, but the majority of the watches I've seen are sold in Japan as overseas models.

This watch is a quartz analogue watch which has an unusual design with a subtle twist on the display.

There are many analogue watches on this blog where there is a chronograph feature, and the watches have 3 small dials on the face for hours, minutes, and seconds. This design has the 3 small circles on the face, but this time they are LCD panels and not dials. Each LCD display has 2 digits in silver on a white background, and can be used in various display modes. The LCD can cover time, date, and alarm, as well as the expected chronograph function.

The button arrangement is a little different too, with the top left button covering the mode selection (rather than the bottom left). To set the digital display, you hold the bottom left button until the seconds flash, and the same button chooses which numbers to change (with the bottom right button), while there is a crown for setting the analogue display.

The face of the watch is quite colourful, but in small splashes. The hour and minute LCD displays are surrounded by a red ring, while the ring around the seconds is yellow. Only the 4, 8, and 12 numbers are on the dial and are surrounded in blue, and the seconds hand is green.

The CE90 Vagary models seem to be pretty uncommon, as I only found 2 references, both of which were Japanese auctions.

The full model number is CE90-S043573, but unfortunately, there is no serial number to give me an idea of the date. As there is no information, the general state and design would suggest to me it comes from the late 00s. The only other information on the watch is that it is all stainless steel, has a Japanese movement, and is water resistant.

Citizen Vagary Shiny Brown 1A36 Watch

Last time I blogged a watch from the Citizen Vagary line, it was different than the normal metal watch with colourful dials. Today's watch is another which fits with that style.

The watch is an entirely plastic design, with a colour matched plastic case and strap, and even a plastic back panel (but that is held on with metal screws). The front screen is also a raised plastic design with a ribbed pattern around the edges. The back doesn't hold all of the information, which is unusual, only having the Vagary name and logo, statements that it is 5 bar water resistant and has a Japanese movement, and that it is made of plastic.

In order to find out the information about the watch, you have to read the extremely small print at the bottom of the dial. This writing reveals that the watch contains a 1A36 module, and has a full model number of 1A36-S086677. The watch is a 3 hand dial design with a simple face of only white hour and minute markers on the brown face (except for the Vagary name and logo at the 3 o'clock position).

I've not spotted this shiny brown version online so far, but have found this design in blue (also with a 1A36-S0866xx model number). I think it is a modern model, so I'm guessing early 2010s (as there is no serial number for identification), but it could be late 2000s too.

Vagary 5432 narrow strap watch

Today's watch is a simple model from one of the Citizen lines of watches.

This is a model from the Vagary line by Citizen, but is a very different style to the ones I've blogged from this line before. The Vagary line are models which seem to be listed from the Italian Citizen company, but normally appear only in the far east.

This model is an analogue watch with a 5432 quartz movement (as seen in one of my Citizen Independent watches). It is a 3 hand dial design with a small rectangular face. The watch module is mounted into a 1 piece bendy plastic strap with ridges to help the flexibility.

The back of the watch has the name and model number which is 5432-S062462. There isn't a normal serial number on the back, with this one only having a 3 digit number. From the Citizen Independent that shares a module with this watch, I would assume that this watch is from the late 2000s.

Citizen Vagary 1A36

It's not been so long since I last posted one of this brand, but I thought it matched so well with my t-shirt today that I couldn't resist.

The watch is by the Vagary line of watches by Citizen. The Vagary line has a lot of mystery as the main website you fine is by Citizen's Italian branch, but most of the web pages and sales sites are in Japanese. The watches in the line seem to be more colourful and playful looking than the other lines, but there are sensible looking models too.

This model is based around the 1A36 quartz movement, and is a much more plain watch than the other Vagary's I've posted. It is a 3 hand dial design in a rectangular case. The design is blue, white, and silver, with blue coloured hands (and a star on the seconds hand) and a blue and white leather strap. The numbers on the dial are in a stretched font, but there is no 6 or 12 with those just being marked with the dial pattern.

The full model number is 1A36-S034043, but there is no serial number to indicate the date. If I assume that the 1A36 module is an update of the 90s 1036 module, then I guess that this is a 2000s watch.

Citizen Vagary FF00 Chronograph

It's back to normal today with a completely different watch!

This time it's one of the Citizen Vagary watches. The Vagary line are a range of normally colourful, but still elegant watches by Citizen which are still going today. I can normally only find them in the Far East, but the website links them to Citizen's Italian arm...

This model is the FF00 and is a chronograph model. It has a 3 hand dial design with 3 smaller dials, but the hands are mixed. The main dial has the minutes and hours hands, while the seconds hand is on the bottom small dial. The chronograph uses the seconds hand on the main dial, and the left of the small dials for the minutes, while the last small dial (top right) covers the 24 hr hours). There is also a date window at the 4 o'clock position.

This particular version is one of the less colourful Vagary watches but there are hints of colour with the small dials, the seconds hand, and the trim around the date window.

The full model number is FF00-S030005, and from the model number, I think it is from 2005. The number in the dial is slightly different (which I've found with quite a few Citizen watches, but don't know why) and reads FF00-S051075.

Citizen Vagary GD00

Today, I'm using one of my mysterious Vagary watches again.

The Vagary line of watches are made my Citizen, and are a bit of a mysterious line. Most of the models in this line I've seen in Japan, but there is no Japanese website. Instead, the website is in Italy, and at the bottom of that page is a  note saying Vagary is a trademark of Citizen Watch Italy SpA. Whether this means it is an Italian line, or just that the trademark is held in every country they operate in, I can't say, but it adds a bit more mystery to an already mysterious line. The Vagary watches themselves tend to me a bit different than the regular Citizen lines, and often feature unusual designs or bright colours.

This model is based around a GD00 module and is a quartz dial watch. It has a 3 hand dial in a rounded square case, and a few unusual design elements. The date window is at the 11 o'clock position, which I think is a first for the watches I've blogged, and the crown is at the 2 o'clock position. There is also a 24 hr dial, but this is in the bottom corner and is a retrograde /jump-back design which is also pretty unusual. It isn't the brightest coloured watch they make, but the shiny green and brown combination is different. The strap is a browny creamy leather design with a green felt back, and the buckle has a tiny Vagary V logo.

I've not found this model in any catalogues, but based on the serial number it appears to be from 2005 (or possibly 1995 but I think this is less likely). The full model number is GD00-S030382.

Citizen Vagary CC01

Today is my second Citizen in a row, and my third from the Vagary line.

The Vagary line by Citizen is a little bit unusual as there isn't much published about them. The watches tend to be along the more unusual and more colourful end of the scale, but they produce some normal looking models in the range too. One site suggests they are designed for maximum comfort and high functionality.

This model is an ana-digi design based around the CC01 module. It has a large square design with a round dial (with stylized hours and minutes numbers on the dial). At the bottom on the dial is a small 6 digit LCD display. The LCD shows time, and other display modes are day and date, alarm, and stopwatch.

The full model number is CC01-S037970. The watch only has a 3 digit serial number, so I don't know when it was released, but my best guess would be the 2000s.

Citizen Vagary Ana-digi Temp - 8989 module

I'm wearing another of my temperature sensing watches again today, but this time it's back to the Ana-Digi Temp models.

The Ana-Digi Temp watches were released by Citizen and started in 1982. The watches have been released in many guises and are still being produced. This one is a more modern example, hailing from 2009, and is part of the Citizen Vagary line. The Vagary watches are one of Citizen's lines for fashion watches, and feature many interesting designs. It seems that the Vagary Ana-digi Temp is one of the least common out there, as I've rarely seen them online.

Generally, the watch follows the standard Ana-Digi Temp design with 2 electronic dials and 3 small windows with LCD displays. The full details of the watches display options can be found in my Ana-Digi Temp overview page (link). There are however a couple of differences with this Vagary model compared to the standard design. The watch doesn't actually say on the case that this is an Ana-digi (Temp) watch, which is unusual, and the normally prominent temperature sensor on the front is hidden!

This model uses the 8989 module, and has dual time, alarm, and stopwatch (down to 1/1000 of a second), as well as the temperature measurement, and it has a bulb based light.

The design features inlaid black perspex panels on the face, and it has a black leather strap (with the Vagary 'V' logo on the buckle and the number 25 imprinted into the back).

The full model number is 8989-S062250, and I think the catalogue number may be VN2-011-50. It also seems the original sale price was 19,950 yen.

Citizen Vagary Dual Dial GA1W

Under the Citizen watch company, there are many sub-lines (including the Independent, 1481010, and Trans Continents lines). The Vagary line is another of those, and seems to be for an older audience than the others.
This watch is an analogue watch with two separate dials. The head of the watch has a double hinge which allows the watch to bend on your wrist, and also to completely fold in half (so you could use it like a nurses watch if you wanted).

There are two separate movements in the watch, but only given the designation GA1W.
The top display is a 2-hand dial, with hour numbers marked around the rim. The bottom display is a 3-hand dial with date, and has minutes numbers around the rim.

I don't know how old the watch is because unlike the normal Citizen watches, there is no long serial number, hence the manufacturing date isn't shown.
The full model number is GA1W-S043859
