Rubicon Kids SIL-881

Today I was spending time with a couple of children, so wanted a kid friendly watch.

The one I chose is another from the Rubicon watch range, but different than the other Rubicons I've blogged so far.

This is a Rubicon Kids watch, and as it says 'kids' on the back where the name normally is, the name may actually be called kids. It has a model number of SIL-881 on the back, along with the usual catchphrase 'The great trick timepiece'. The Rubicon watches are made by Yazaki Co Ltd. from Japan, and the trademark is pretty recent, but I haven't found out much more.

It is a 2 hand dial watch with the seconds having a rotating disc. The seconds indicator is a little weird and looks like a 4 legged squid wearing a helmet.

The strap is a moulded rubbery plastic one with crocodiles. On the strap, the crocodiles are either dreaming of fishes, or chasing after the fish.

Rubicon Skull Moon LTH-0993

Today, I'm back with the Rubicon watches. After finding that this was a brand with a wide range of cheap and cheerful watches, I've been noticing them more, so have ended up with a few different designs.

Today's design is called Skull Moon and is the second watch by Rubicon that has an 'XXXX Moon' name. The watch has a shiny black rectangular case with a printed glass. Most of the glass is painted black, but there is a window in the painting in the shape of a skull (along with the Rubicon name). Even with this design, they've managed to squeeze in very discrete hour markers with little dashes around the edge of the skull. Behind the window, the face is covered with a sparkly silver glitter paint so the the overall look is of a sparkly silver skull on a black watch. The look is finished by a shiny black patent leather strap.

In the window you can also see the 3 hands of the watch which is powered by a Japanese quartz module. The model number on the back is LTH-0993, and it also has the phrase "The Great Trick Timepiece" on the back plate.

The Rubicon brand is owned/made by Yazaki Co. Ltd who are based in Tokyo, Japan. I've not been able to find much about the brand, but found a Japanese trademark register site which seems to show the Rubicon name was filed for a trademark in June 2011 and granted in August 2012. This is a little strange though, as I blogged my first one in Jan 2012.

John the watch

So today is the first proof that my watch collection is not just full of rare and exclusive watches, but is home to the weird, wonderful, and occasionally downright silly! This watch firmly falls in the silly category :-).

The watch itself is a standard, watch which I've seen sold cheaply in many stores. The model is called the Rubicon, and manufactured for the Yazaki Co. Ltd from Tokyo. On the box, the Rubicon is refered to as "The Great Trick Timepiece".

What got me interested in buying this one was that it had been given a cute personality ( reminding me of cookie monster from sesame street), and that we share a name - yes, the watch is called John! Everyone, say hi to John the watch :-) The conclusion of this post is that if you want to make a cheap plain watch interesting, give it eyes and a name, and make it cute (and I'll buy it. ;-) ) !!
