Sony MD Walkman Wireless Controller watch

My watch today is an unusual watch that had its being moment in history.

The minidisc (MD) technology fitted in a small gap in the transition from tape to CD to MP3. During the early CD age (being released in 1992), they provided a compact solution that was more portable than CDs but with a similar quality and recording capabilities. Unfortunately, they never really took off (outside of Japan) and were only seen for a short period of music history (although they only stopped producing the players earlier this year) as the mp3 players took over from 1998 onwards.

Today's watch is by Sony and was designed as a wireless controller for one of their MD players. The watch is large and rubbery with a diamond shaped LCD display. The widest part of the display has a dot matrix array which normally shows the time, and there are two segmented digits below for the seconds. Buttons are hidden under the rubber and are marked with moulded text highlighting the function. The watch module has time, date, stopwatch, and multiple alarms, and there is an el-backlight. As a remote control, the buttons cover volume, and there is a button/lever on the front that is for ff/rew and play/stop.

The watch takes a CR2032 battery which goes in a coin opening hatch on the back.
There is a model number on the back which says RM-MZW1. Based on this, the watch pairs with the MZ-E7W. It is a bluetooth connection, and pressing the stop button starts the pairing process.
